What Counts As A Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any oral issue that is causing you pain and discomfort, that you cannot treat on your own. This includes oral injuries, such as:
- Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
- Impacted teeth (teeth driven back into the socket)
- Cracked, chipped, and damaged teeth
- Oral damage like cheek and gum lacerations
- Loose teeth
- Damaged fillings or crowns
- Severe toothaches
How to Care for an Emergency
The most important thing to do is to stay calm. Contact Bear Brook Dental Care right away to schedule an emergency appointment, because the sooner you get treatment, the better. Some issues, like a knocked-out tooth, should be treated within 1-2 hours in order to save the tooth. All dental emergencies should be treated within 12 hours, or as soon as possible.
After you have scheduled your emergency appointment, do your best to recover any teeth or dental work that have fallen out. Knocked-out teeth should be replaced in the socket or kept in a cup of milk to preserve the pulp.
If you are bleeding or in pain, you can address this by placing gauze or clean cotton balls in your mouth to absorb blood or taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen. Aspirin should NOT be used, as it is a blood thinner and interferes with the clotting process. You can also use external ice packs to relieve pain and swelling, but DO NOT place ice directly on the affected area.
